National Museum of Lithuania

National Museum of Lithuania is the largest depository of Lithuanian historical heritage, where museum valuables reflecting the cultural history of the country are collected, preserved, studied and popularised on a systematic basis. At the same time it is the oldest museum of Lithuania with its roots in the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, established in 1855 on the initiative of cultural historian Count Eustache Tyszkiewicz. The museum and the main expositions of the National Museum of Lithuania are located in the historical centre of Vilnius – in the buildings within the territory of Vilnius Castles.

The New Arsenal

The exposition on the history of the Old Lithuania reflects the changeable times of prosperity and recession of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the establishment of the state in XIII century to its final collapse in 1795.

The entire XIX century history of Lithuania is the history of an occupied country and a subdued nation. Nevertheless, this is also the age of resistance and liberation struggles, the period of nation's formation and modernisation.

Lifestyle Culture of Lithuanian Peasants – Interior Textile and Clothing. The various rooms interiors of a residential peasants' house from XVIII century till the end of XIX century have been reproduced in the exposition.

  Cross Crafting.

The Old Arsenal

In year 2000, the archaeological exposition "Prehistoric Lithuania" was opened in two halls of the Old Arsenal of the Vilnius Lower Castle. Chronological limits of the exposition expanded: the emergence of the first inhabitants in the territory of Lithuania in the 10th millennium BC – the establishment of the Lithuanian State in XIII century. Now more than 4,000 archaeological findings are displayed in the exposition.

Gediminas Castle Tower

The exposition of the Vilnius Castle Museum displays reconstruction models of Vilnius castles of the second part of XIV and the beginning of XVII centuries; armament; iconographic material of the Old Vilnius; well-known photographs of the Baltic Way.

The Bastion of Vilnius Defensive Wall

  Museum is under reconstruction.

Kazys Varnelis House-Museum

The House-Museum of painter and collector Kazys Varnelis is like an ordinary residential house. In the small halls, full of elements of the Old Gothic architecture, expositions of historical graphics and Western European sculpture are arranged. The expositions are supplemented with ensembles of Renaissance and Baroque furniture and creative abstractions by Kazys Varnelis. Such harmony, designed on the principle of contrasts, makes the exposition unique and exceptional. The collection of Kazys Varnelis, which was given to Lithuania as a gift, substantially enriches sets of Lithuanian cultural values, fills in the gaps of the collections possessed by Lithuania, and introduces new exhibition principles.
