Vilnius Old Town

  In 1994, Vilnius historic centre was inscribed to UNESCO World Heritage List. This historic part of the city formed in the 14-18th centuries. Today it is recognized that on its prospering times Vilnius made great influence on culture and architectural development in all the Middle East of Europe. The objects of Vilnius historical centre are extraordinary examples of architectural ensemble and landscape type.

  One of the most beautiful capitals in Europe has been famous for its tolerance since old times. In this easternmost Western European cultural centre, both Eastern and Western cultural traditions coexisted. Various confessions' and nationalities' inhabitants settled in the city and its suburbs.

  The period of the ancient Lithuanian Grand Duchy political and cultural centre is represented by a complex of defensive system and representative buildings. In the 16th century defensive wall surrounded the historical centre of the city.

  Century after century Vilnius has been growing rapidly. Despite devastating fires and wars, radial city plan so typical to the Middle Ages is preserved till nowadays, as well as irregular net of narrow streets, unchanged type of development, architecture and natural environment harmony.

    Authentic buildings who served defensive, residential, representative and spiritual purposes were preserved in this spectacular part of Vilnius city. Vilnius Old Town preserved Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles' features. This city architecture is unique, because all styles join in one harmonious esthetical unit. Very special atmosphere in Vilnius’ panorama is created by typical 17th century Vilnius Baroque school domes of the churches and restrained monumental Classical architecture.

  In today's universal context, Vilnius historic centre is not only specific civilization heritage, but also a witness of exceptional cultural lifestyle tradition.
